Roscoe by Midlake

Apparently this has been all over the internet since January, but I just got a hold of it Friday. It's a new song by one of my favorite bands who happen to be from Denton, Texas. They're called Midlake, and the track is called Roscoe and should be appearing on their forthcoming album, Van Occupanther. I personally discovered them about 5 or 6 years ago randomly in a bar on 6th street in Austin. They were very young and I was just there for a drink with some friends. One of those nights when you're not even paying attention to the band. Except that this band was so exceptional that I couldn't help but listen. By the end of their set, I handed over my $5 (!) for their EP (i think it was self-published) called Milkmaid Grand Army. It blew me away. It sounded like Radiohead, but in the best way. In a way that's not derivative. I brought it back to New York and played it for all my friends who were quickly impressed. I lost touch with them after that and only recently reconnected with them via MySpace and am eagerly anticipating a trip to Austin this week to (hopefully) catch their showcase. Space is at a minimum and getting in to see your favorite band is always a crapshoot. Anyway, I just got a hold of this song Friday because they posted it on Myspace and have probably listened to it like 50 times since. I looked up the lyrics because the harmonies are so beautiful I wanted to be able to sing along. I couldn't find them anywhere, so I took a shot at transcribing them myself. If anyone has any corrections, feel free to email me. (Roscoe Lyrics after the jump)

Call Timothy "Speed" Levitch

  • This used to list Speed Levitch's phone number, but it doesn't work anymore. Now all I have for you is an old quote from his answering machine, which is pure poetry.
"I am lack of coordination being utilized. I am dysfunction gazing into the eyes of function. I am quieted, odd, menaced awkwardness dying at the altar of suave. They call me Levitch. Leave me a message."
